AUSTIN (KXAN) — In a first-of-its-kind study that has been completed and published, a University of Texas Institute of Spatial Economic Analysis expert compared crime across Austin neighborhoods using crime data and smartphone-based accelerometer data and found a correlation between low crime in a neighborhood and smartphone-based accelerometer data, according to the study’s author.
“Having a map that’s based on crime data is critical in fighting crime because it helps people who work on street-level police work and those who are involved in community policing and other community-level services,” said Scott Miller, the report’s author and a professor at the University of Texas at Austin.
The study is the first in the world to examine the relationship between crime and accelerometer data, which measures an individual’s physical activity using accelerometers embedded in phones, according to Miller.
“We see this correlation, where you have really low crime in a neighborhood and low accelerometer data, and this is actually a very powerful tool to understand crime,” he said.
Other studies have found physical activity to be a good predictor for crime; however, it has been difficult to get a more accurate look at the correlation.
“The smartphone is going to help us to get a better, more robust, more accurate and more comprehensive look at what’s happening in a neighborhood because it’s so accurate,” Miller said.
Miller and his team looked at crime data that is collected by the Austin Police Department, such as burglaries, assaults, robberies, and theft.
