awk variable inside another variable not being recognized

I have a little problem with AWK.
I want to pass the value of an awk variable to a perl variable, so I tried this:
$a=”this is a string”;
print $b

this is a string

This is perl script which I am trying to implement:

Now the point is that after entering the awk code, I can see $b=”this is a string”, but when it comes to the line where the input string is passed to perl the output should be $b=, but it turns into $b=() instead. What am I doing wrong?
I think the solution is somewhere in the solution of this post

$b=($a) stores the result of the subexpression in $b. The return value from a subexpression is the number of matches in the current record. You are assigning $b the number of records matched by $a, which happens to be a string, rather than the number of matches, and that means you never put anything into $b.
Use $b=$a instead.
